FAQ

What month is the best to visit Alaska?

The best month to visit Alaska depends on what you want to do on your trip. You are going to want to determine your goals as a traveler and then pick your travel dates to achieve those goals. Most people think mid-May to the end of September are the best months to visit Alaska.

Where can you see bears in Alaska?

You can see bears in Alaska in a variety of ways. You can take a guided bear viewing tour with a company or you can see bears as you are driving down the road. You have a much better chance of seeing bears on a guided tour and if it is a goal for your trip we highly recommend booking a bear-viewing trip. We have 2 options at our lodge. Both are fly-out bear-viewing trips. One option is at Lake Clark National Park the other option is Wolverine Creek.

What kinds of bears live in Alaska?

In Alaska, there are brown bears (coastal), grizzly bears (interior), black bears, and polar bears. Depending on what part of the state you are in determines which type of bear you could see. On the Kenai Peninsula, we have brown and black bears.

What is the best month for whale watching in Alaska?

May and June are the best 2 months for whale watching in Alaska, but good whale watching can last most of the summer months. You can see gray, humpback, and orca whales as well as Dall’s porpoise on the same trip during the peak of the season. Our partners, Jim and Kathleen, have over 25 years of experience and provide you with an amazing full-day experience in a private 16-guest setting, which is much nicer than hopping on a big cruise boat that holds 100+ people.

Where is the best whale watching in Alaska?

Some of the best access for whale watching in Alaska are in Seward on the Kenai Peninsula and Juneau in Southeast Alaska. If you fly into Anchorage, then Seward is your best option. If you are on a cruise ship or flying to southeast Alaska, then Juneau is an option. Our whale-watching trips go out of Seward, Alaska, which is a day trip from Silvertip Lodge and Cabins.

What is there to do in Soldotna, Alaska?

Soldotna is a river city with the world-famous glacial Kenai River running right through its town center. It is the central most location to base all your sightseeing and fishing adventures out of and is adjacent to Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. From Soldotna, you have tons of options including bear viewing, hiking, fishing, sightseeing on your own, and enjoying local events. The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor’s Center and the miles of walking from the beaches to the boardwalks along the river provide an awesome experience. The Kenai River Brewery and local restaurants offer good drinks and eats. Soldotna is a great place to reside while exploring the Kenai Peninsula.

What is there to do in Seward, Alaska?

Many of our guests travel to Seward for a sightseeing day trip when they are staying with us at Silvertip. In Seward, you can book guided sightseeing trips in Kenai Fjords National Park or sightsee on your own. Some of the guided adventures you can do include a whale watching / glacier tour, zipline & canopy tours, and dog sledding trips. You can fish out of Seward as well. Some things you can do on your own include the Sealife Center, Exit Glacier hike, visiting shops in downtown Seward, and relaxing in the park.

What is there to do in Homer Alaska?

Many of our guests travel to Homer for a sightseeing day trip while staying at Silvertip. In Homer, you can walk the famous Homer Spit, a 4.5-mile long, skinny piece of land that holds the boat harbor and with many shops and restaurants. Homer also has water taxi companies that can take you across into Kachemak Bay State Park. You can also enjoy adventures such as guided kayaking, hiking on your own, guided ocean fishing, and general sightseeing. The drive down to Homer is amazing in itself as you drive along the coast of the Kenai Peninsula and have the opportunity to pull over and view 4 volcanos along the way.
